Talking to Strangers 3: Avoiding Networking Pitfalls

Friend...

I remember attending a networking event years ago, full of enthusiasm and hope, but leaving feeling frustrated. I handed out business cards, smiled, and made small talk, yet when I walked out the door, none of those interactions felt like they would turn into anything meaningful. It was one of those “what went wrong?” moments. I realized I had unknowingly fallen into some classic networking pitfalls. Once I learned how to avoid them, everything changed.

Networking Pitfalls: What to Avoid for Maximum Impact

So, let’s get real about what might be tripping you up and how to make sure your networking efforts lead to authentic, lasting connections.

1- Being Too Transactional
We’ve all met that person who seems laser-focused on what they can get, asking for favors before they’ve even built a relationship. I’ve been guilty of it, too. You walk into a room hoping to find someone who can help you land that dream job. But here’s the secret: people don’t like feeling that they’re just a means to an end.

Actionable Tip: Start by asking, "How can I help this person?" rather than "How can they help me?" Maybe it’s sharing an article that could be useful or offering an introduction to someone in your network. This generosity shows you’re there to build a genuine connection, not just to benefit yourself.

2- Neglecting Follow-Up
I used to think, “Well, if they’re interested, they’ll reach out to me.” Not True! Most people have busy lives, and those valuable connections can fade if you don’t take that small step to follow up. A simple “thank you” or “great to meet you” can keep the momentum going. It’s such an easy win, but so many people miss it.

Actionable Tip: When you meet someone new, set a reminder to follow up within a week. Keep it light and sincere—no need for long emails. Consider using the following template:

Subject: Let’s Keep the Conversation Going!

Hey [Contact's Name],

It was awesome connecting with you at [Event Name]! I’ve been thinking about our chat on [specific topic], and I’d love to dive deeper into that sometime—your perspective really stuck with me.

If you’re up for it, let’s grab a virtual coffee or schedule a quick catch-up. I’m all about staying in touch and seeing how we might support each other going forward.

3- Limited Networking
This one took me by surprise. I used to think networking only mattered within my industry. But some of the most valuable opportunities I’ve found came from unexpected places—people in adjacent fields or even outside my profession entirely. Broadening my network brought fresh ideas, new perspectives, and opportunities I never would have found otherwise.

Actionable Tip: Step out of your comfort zone. Attend an event that’s slightly outside your typical sphere—whether it’s a community gathering, a workshop in a neighboring industry, or even a book club. You never know who you’ll meet or what ideas will spark.

P.S. I’d love to hear how your networking is going! Hit reply and let me know one new connection you've made this week or a follow-up you're planning. I’ll share my favorite tips for keeping those conversations going!
